RIAAN STEYN
Professional Senior Architect
Riaan is an award-winning Architect with more than 27 years of international and South African experience. His career spans a wide spectrum of architectural work — from landmark commercial and mixed-use developments to luxury residential estates, boutique hotels, large-format retail centres, schools, clinics, fire stations, community facilities and master-planning projects.
Riaan’s international foundation was built at the award-winning Sheppard Robson International Architects in London (1998–2001), where he contributed to a number of projects ranging from the construction fit-out drawings for JP Morgan Headquarters in London to the competition winning concept development for the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Headquarters in Manchester, including the £800 million City Point tower (designed by Santiago Calatrava), the King Edward Court redevelopment at the London Stock Exchange, complex ceiling designs for Pfizer, data centres for Cisco and Global Switch, and successful planning applications for commercial buildings. Riaan Initial arrive on a contract for 2 weeks but proved to be such an asset that he was invited to join as a permanent member of staff.
He has also contributed to hotel and resort concepts in South Africa, Angola, Egypt and Albania, as well as masterplans for Mega – Housing Development in Malawi, Ghana, Botswana.
Returning to South Africa in 2001, Riaan worked freelance at QTS & Arc Architects, Johannesburg before founding and directing RSARC (Riaan Steyn Architects) from 2003 to 2016. He served as Director and Shareholder at Ebesa Architects (2017–2020) before co-founding Arc Studio Architects in June 2020, where he continues to practise as partner and director.
In South Africa, Riaan has led or contributed to significant developments such as the R3 Billion Edelweiss/ Daggafontein Mega – City in Springs, 1600 SHRA Units social housing development in Ga-Rankwa, 3 million m² Afri-Capital & Afri-Tower mixed-use, mega-city in Tshwane, regional shopping centres, luxury apartment buildings, boutique hotels, office parks, industrial warehouses, and community infrastructure including primary and secondary schools, clinics and fire stations. His portfolio includes high-end residential estates and beach houses along the Garden Route, as well as large-scale masterplans for lifestyle villages and retail precincts.
A defining area of Riaan’s expertise is affordable and social housing. Since 2006 he has led the design, approval, and delivery of more than 20 000+ affordable, GAP, SHRA, BNG, CRU, FLISP, and multi-storey units — ranging from 32 m² to 150 m² — for private developers, mining houses, and government partners. Several developments have received national recognition, including multiple Govan Mbeki Awards for Best CRU Development (National Winner in 2015 for Marikana and 2014 for Boitekong /Rustenburg) and the 2011 South African Housing Federation Project of the Year for Seraleng Housing.
